  On the Cinematic Front    

The 19th Street Theatre presents The Messenger, Director: Oren Moverman, Cast: Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Samantha Morton, Jena Malone, Eamonn Walker. U.S. Army Officer Will Montgomery has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Army's Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia, to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband's death, Will's emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival. Rated R - 1hr. 52mins. The Messenger runs through March 4th.

March 5th - The Last Station Director: Michael Hoffman, Cast: Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, Paul Giamatti, Anne-Marie Duff. In 1910, famed novelist Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) and his wife Sofya (Helen Mirren) vehemently disagree over the rights to Tolstoy's literary legacy. Sofya believes her husband should bequeath them to her upon his death, while Tolstoy's chief disciple, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), has nearly convinced the writer to sign the rights over to the Russian people. To this end, Chertkov inserts a spy into Tolstoy's household, who promptly falls for one of the novelist's daughters.  Runtime:1 hr. 50 min  Rated R.

  Classical Calendar    

March 4th - Mozart's Le Nozze Di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro) is a continuation of the story line of Rossini's The Barber of Seville. At the end of Barber, Rosina and Count Almaviva are wed. In Marriage of Figaro, their relationship has fallen apart. The Count is unfaithful and Rosina has a secret lover of her own. Figaro and Susanna, Rosina's pretty maid, want to marry but they need permission from the Count who would like Susanna for himself. Figaro and Susanna trick the Count into seeing the error of his ways and the opera ends happily.  The opera is being staged at the F.M. March 5th - Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem presents the Escher String Quartet with Benjamin Hochman, Piano, performing Dvořák and Beethoven. The concert will be at Foy Hall and the baton falss at 8:00 PM

March 7th - Temple Beth El presents Cantatica in their performance of JOYFUL, JAZZY AND JEWISH! Extraordinary, Beautiful Music by Contemporary Jewish American Composers.  Cantatica is a new, progressive, nonprofit musical organization devoted to broadening the scope of choral, vocal and instrumental music - its cultural connections, programming, and performance. The concert begins at 4:30 PM

March 7th - As part of its Annual Concert Series, First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Crest Boulevard and Tilghman Street, Allentown is pleased to present Lehigh Valley Harmonizers in concert at 3:00 p.m.  The Lehigh Valley Harmonizers have been entertaining audiences in the Lehigh Valley for the past 60 years since it founding in 1949.  The chorus consists of about 30 male singers devoted to singing 4 part harmony in barbershop style. A varied program of barbershop harmony music featuring the local chorus and quartets will include popular music ranging from traditional barbershop favorites, to surprising renditions of classic church hymns, to more modern songs sung in barbershop style. Looking Ahead

March 12th - The Cedar Crest Chamber Music Series proudly presents the Dali String Quartet in its third performance of the series.  The program will include quartets by Haydn and Mendelssohn as well as shorter works by Latin and South American composers, Chabacano, Almaran, Gardel and Amaya.  The violinists in the group are Luigi Mazzocchi and Carlos Rubio; the violist is Adriana Linares;and the cellist is Jesus Morales-Matos.  The concert will be held in the Harmon Hall of Peace in the Miller Building on the Cedar Crest College campus.

March 13th - NEPA Philharmonic presents Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, The Eroica. Beethoven's inspiration for his famous 3rd Symphony "Eroica" was a vision of an unnamed heroic man. This great work stretched the limits of all symphonies written before it, and set a high bar for symphonies written after it. The Philharmonic will also play Mendelssohn's picturesque Hebrides Overture and Fauré's lovely Pelléas et Mélisande Suite .Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture Fauré: Pelléas et Mélisande Suite Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" The concert is being performed at the F.M. March 13th and 14th; The Allentown Symphony will present the Sibelius Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. The concert will consist of the following selections. Lamentoso (World Premiere) Wittry, Concerto for Violin, Op. 47, d minor, Sibelius,Violin Soloist - SoJin Kim, 2009 Schadt Winner, Symphony No. 3, Op. 56, a minor Mendelssohn. As we create a work of art or recreate it, each of us trys to capture emotions and impressions in music. Driven by a sense of inspiration and passion for what we do, see that passion culminate in a concert featuring a world premiere by Music Director Diane Wittry, a vivid solo performance by the 2009 Schadt String Competition winner, SoJin Kim, and Mendelssohn's musical impressions of the landscape of Scotland. March 14th - Two Part Invention, the flute and classical guitar duo of Nora Suggs and John Arnold, will present Here and Nowon Sunday March 14, at 3 pm, at Wesley Methodist Church, 2540 Center Street, Bethlehem. They will be joined by guest artist Patricia Koch Budlong, soprano. The concert coincides with the release of Two Part Invention's newest CD, Bad Pets, which includes many of the works to be performed Tickets for the performance are available only at the door.

March 31th - The Williams Center for the Arts presents the Brentano String Quartet - Critics and audiences alike are enthralled by the Brentano String Quartet. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding” raves the London Independent, while The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism.” Since winning the prestigious Naumburg Prize and the inaugural Cleveland Quartet Award in the mid-1990s, the Brentano has been a fixture at cultural centers throughout the world. The concert starts at 8:00 p.m.,

April 9th - Award-winning saxophonist, David Liebman, joins the Lehigh Valley Jazz Repertory and Lehigh students to play works by Shorter, Pastorius and Zawinul. The concert will be held on Friday, April 9th at Lehigh University's Baker Hall at 8:00 p.m. For more information: 610-758-2787.

April 10th - Diane Wittry leads The Allentown Symphony in Gypsy Rhythms with guest performer, Laurence Kaptain playing the Cimbalom.

April 17th Chanticleer will appear in concert at Zoellner Arts Center’s Baker HallChanticleer is comprised of 12 voices of the "world's reigning male chorus”. Chanticleer was named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America and has performed at more than 100 concerts in 2008-09, Chanticleer will premieres a piece written by Steven Sametz, commissioned by the LU Choral Arts to commemorate its 25th season. The Lehigh Saengerbun Chorus rehearses at Egner Chapel, Muhlenberg College on Tuesday evenings starting at 7:30pm.  Because of our success and recent increases in audience attendance, we are expanding the size of our chorus.  We welcome new members in the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass sections. March 21st - Award winning Boston contemporary folk singer/songwriter (and Easton native) Terry Kitchen will perform a Music in the Gallery concert at St. John's Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry Street, Easton at 1 PM. Kitchen will be joined by special guest New Jersey folksinger Mara Levine. There is an $8 suggested donation for the concert benefiting The Gallery at St. John's. April 9th - Kutztown Folk Music Society presents Daybreak, a Folk, gospel, American traditional, Celtic, original on a large variety of strings (plus piano).  Daybreak, applies their  rich blend of acoustic instruments and voices to Celtic jigs, reels, hornpipes and ballads; American folk tunes and songs, folk hymns, original pieces, and seasonal songs. June 23-27 - 20th Annual Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering - Little Buffalo Family Campground Newport, Pennsylvania. The Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering brings together autoharp enthusiasts from around the world for five days of workshops, concerts and 'round the clock music-making. Bucks County Folk Song Society holds its regular monthly meetings at Wrightstown Friends Meetinghouse, Rte 413 (Durham Rd.)
Wrightstown, PA. Meetings are normally held on the first Sunday of every month, but occasionally switch to the second Sunday when the first is on a holiday weekend. About 1-1/2 Hours for Munching, Jamming, and Schmoozing. The festivities begin around 6:30 and end promptly at 10:00pm.

City of Bethlehem Bagpipe Band. The Bethlehem Bagpipe Band is a street band that is located in Bethlehem, Pa. Currently, we have over 25 playing and several non-playing members, that range in age from 12 to 50+. We are always seeking out new members. March 1st - April 15th - The Allentown Music Cluib is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior in Northampton or Lehigh county.  The award will be given to a senior who has been accepted into an accredited music school for the performing arts.  Applications will be accepted for those who are majoring in music performance and planning to attend college in the fall.  The application deadline is April 15th.  For information: Jane Gambone at 610-435-0120.  
 
March 3rd thru March 31st -The South Side Branch of the Bethlehem Area Public Library is holding a five-week Family Place workshop for parents and their toddlers ages one to three.  The Toddlers at Play program connects parents to human resources throughout the community and allows parents to speak with specialists and share parenting tips with others.  This program runs on consecutive Wednesdays starting March 3rd through March 31 from 11 AM to 12:15 PM, at 400 Webster Street. March 14th - The Lehigh Valley Idols Final will be held Sunday, March 14th, at 7 PM. at Hotel Bethlehem.  There will be three age group winners: 10-13, 14-18, and 20 and over.

March 14th - The Bethlehem Area Public Library will hold Goofy Golf on Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM to benefit their Room to Grow Project.  A team of Lehigh University engineering students are turning the mounds of books into a mini golf course for some fun for all ages.  A baby golf area is available, and the Bank Street School of Rock Band will perform.  The event is held at the Library on 11 West Church Street in Bethlehem and there is a fee.  For more information please visit their website or cal 610-867-3761 extension 259.

March 15th - The Fifth Annual Lehigh Valley Student Poetry Project is here! This competition is open to high school, middle school, and elementary school students in the following school districts: East Penn, Salisbury, Parkland, Northwestern, Whitehall-Coplay, Catasaqua, Northampton, and Bethlehem as well as other private or charter schools in the Press newspapers' circulation areas.  Each student may submit one entry, and all entries must be Received by March 15th.  Winners will read their poems on air at WDIY and have their poems published in The Press newspaper. March thru May 23rd -The Crayola Factory, 30 Center Square, Easton, presents a dinosaur exhibit which runs through May 23rd.  The exhibit features a 9-foot-tall brontosaurus, an 11 1/2 foot long stegosaurus, and a 6 by 11 foot tyrannosaurus rex, all made of PVC pipe, chicken wire, staples, paper mache, and paint.  There is a fee.  For more information, 610-515-8000 or vist their website.
 
The 2010 FREDDY© Awards For High School Performances is shaping up to be a great one this year. The FREDDY© Awards program is designed to recognize and reward exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theatre in local high schools. The 3-hour LIVE broadcast includes a stellar opening number, performances by nominated musicals, actors and actresses, and presentation of the 2009 FREDDY© Awards in 21 award categories.

The State Theatre’s FREDDY© Awards is the only high school musical awards program in the nation that produces a live television show. The telecast has received numerous broadcast awards, including a 2005 Mid-Atlantic EMMY® for Outstanding Performing Arts Program. The award ceremony takes place on Thursday, May 27, 2010 - 7 pm at the State Theatre Center For The Arts.  Watch it live on WFMZ Channel 69 or stream at http://www.wfmz.com/. March 21st – The Lehigh Valley Story Tellers Guild present Children's Sunday Storytelling Series at Godfrey Daniels at 2:00 PM.  March 21st's storyteller is Kathy Long. People of all ages - from nursery schools to nursing homes - make up Kathy's audiences. She believes everyone has a great capacity to learn through storytelling and it has a dual purpose - to entertain and to educate. ArtsQuest's KidTunes Concerts is a music series designed to introduce children to diverse musical genres like rock, jazz, world, and folk. The concert series features talented children's performers from throughout the Northeast. This series will run through the second Saturday of every month at 10 AM at the Banana Factory, Bethlehem. The lineup includes

  • March 13th - Suzi Shelton - Suzi rocks parents and kids alike, whether it be thousands of families at the Lincoln Center tree lighting to swarms of fans at the Southpaw Festival.
  • April 10th - Classic rockers StarFish - Get ready to rock! StarFish comes to the KidTunes Series with their unique brand of cool, classic rock-style music for kids.
  • May 9th - Former Meat loaf guitarist mr:Ray - Music for the kid in all of us! mr. Ray (Ray Andersen) entertains with mostly original pop/rock songs about friendly aliens, dinosaurs, zebras, imagination and other groovy kid stuff.
  • June 10th - Rockers Dogs On Fleas - Dog on Fleas has been recording and performing music for young children for 10 years.. April 16th & 17th - Charitable organization's Angel 34, Camelot for Children, and Dream Come True are joining together with Nazareth, Easton, Dieruff, and William Allen High Schools to hold Hope-a-Thon, a 24 hour event to raise money to benefit childhood cancer.  This event, filled with dancing, music, and fun will take place on April 16th to 17th from 7pm to 7pm at the Charles Chrin Community Center. March 20th - Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley is holding their 8K run , 5 K run, and ½ mile fun run at the Ironton Rail Trail in Whitehall.  Proceeds from the event will send 2 families to Camp Sunshine, which supports children with life threatening illnesses and their families.  Registration will be held from 8-9:30 AM with the events beginning at 10 AM.    For more information or to register for the event check out their website.

March 28th - Children 10 years of age and younger are invited to Fountain Hill Borough’s 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt.  The hunt is open to children residing in the Borough of Fountain Hill and will be held on Sunday March 28th beginning at 12 noon at Fountain Hill Park located on the 1300 Block of Stanley Avenue. A pre-registration admission pass is required for each child.  Admission passes are available until March 19th at the Borough Administrative office located at 941 Long Street from 9 AM- 4 PM Monday-Friday.  Proof of residency in the Borough is required for passes.

The DaVinci Science Center in Allentown is seeking volunteers to serve as exhibit educators to assist visitors with more than 200 hands-on exhibits. Volunteers should be effective communicators and enjoy working with people. The center is open 7 days a week. Training is held on site and all participants are required to have background clearances. Jazz in the Valley is asking all artists to submit poster designs for the 1st Annual Jazz in the Valley Festival. The requirements for the poster are it needs to be vertical, the size of the artwork must be 24x18, and the artwork can be in any media. The deadline for all entries is March 30th 2010. The Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink located on Illick's Mill Road is open for ice skating Sunday-Thursday from 1-5 pm and Friday and Saturday from 1-5 and 7-10 pm. Season passes are also available.
