Farmer’s Markets in the Lehigh Valley begin opening throughout this month of May. These are a wonderful resource for those of us that value knowing the source of our food and want to support local food producers. All of these markets provide a unique shopping experience where customers can sample many of the foods, develop relationships with the vendors, discover unique varieties of foods and plants and learn healthy cooking tips at a fun, family-oriented destination.
Today on Living Green in the Lehigh Valley we are featuring a recurring event on renewable energy and sustainability, a monthly lecture series presented by the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association or MAREA. We have as our guest, Philip Jones, a MAREA board member. Phil, tell us a little about the lecture series.
It is important to think of every day as earth day. Remember that it is our repeated daily actions that affect the earth.
Water is a precious resource, so use only the water you need, and reuse it when possible.
A buried cistern or rain barrels can save the water from your roof so you can use it instead of drinkable water to irrigate your plants or flush your toilets.
Drip irrigation or soaker hoses use 1/10th as much water as spray or flood irrigation and the water gets to the roots where it is needed rather than evaporating.
This is Bill Dautremont-Smith, guest host this evening. Our guest is Lorna Midgelow-Yearwood, an environmental consultant; she teaches vegetable gardening at Northampton Community College and is active with many local environmental non-profits.
Lorna, let’s set the stage by talking about the predicted impacts of climate change in Pennsylvania?
